Staying safe: theft
Most theft is opportunistic. Keep valuables out of sight, lock vehicles, and stay aware in busy places — small habits close the easy opportunities.
When you are out
- Keep bags zipped and in front of you in crowded places, markets, and on public transport.
- Do not leave phones, wallets, or headphones on tables while you queue or visit the bathroom.
- Be wary of distraction thefts — someone bumping you or asking for directions while an accomplice takes your bag.
- Plan a well-lit route home. Stick to busy streets when carrying valuables.
Vehicles, bikes, and tools
- Lock cars, vans, motorbikes, and trailers every time. Use a steering lock, alarm, or quality bike chain as an extra deterrent.
- Park in well-lit, busy places. Prefer a garage or off-street parking when you can.
- Never leave laptops, tools, or shopping bags visible — even under a coat on the seat.
- Register bikes and record frame numbers. Secure trailers and ride-ons with locks or a hitch lock.
At home and online
- Keep spare keys inside — not under a mat or pot plant.
- Photograph jewellery, electronics, and tools; keep serial numbers somewhere safe (not only on the device).
- Check bank and card statements for unfamiliar transactions and report them quickly.
- Be alert to scams and fake courier or bank messages — Neighbourhood Support has fraud-prevention tips.
